Berodin Blog: Calm Before the Wax—Try These Redness-Reducing Hacks

We all know waxing leaves skin smooth and fresh and has many benefits, but the truth is a little redness is part of the process. Since hair is removed at the root, follicles stay open, making sensitive areas like the face and Brazilian more prone to irritation. The good news? With these pre and post-wax hacks and a little teamwork, you and your clients can keep their skin calm and glowing.

Have Them Start at Home

Pre-wax prep is one of the best ways to set the stage for smooth skin. That’s because proper preparation can make all the difference in reducing redness and irritation. Remind your clients to follow these pre-wax steps:

  • Let it grow – Hair should be at least ¼ inch long (about 3-4 weeks of growth) for optimal waxing results.

  • Exfoliate regularly – Encourage gentle exfoliation using a natural body wash and exfoliating gloves daily to help prevent ingrown hairs.

  • Time their shower – A warm shower a couple of hours before the appointment can soften the skin, but showering immediately before can make the skin too sensitive.

  • Skip lotions and sprays – Clients should avoid applying lotions, self-tanners, body sprays, or deodorants before their appointment to ensure the wax adheres properly, and wait at least 24 hours to apply post-wax.

  • Plan ahead – Remind them to schedule their waxing at least two days before sun exposure, and avoid tanning beds, saunas, or hot tubs right before and after their session.

Pro Wax Treatment Tips

Certain waxed areas, like the face, back, and Brazilian, are more prone to redness and breakout. To minimize this risk, incorporate these pro tips into your wax treatments.

  • Apply an essential oil followed by a blemish control gel, and a post wax soothing cream immediately after waxing to suppress bacteria and speed up healing. This will help with redness and breakouts.

  • After a soft wax treatment, massaging Jasmine Oil into the waxed area not only removes any residual wax but also provides soothing nourishment. This step ensures a smooth, irritation-free finish while leaving the skin hydrated and refreshed.

Preventing Redness is a Long Game

The key to keeping post-wax redness at bay is aftercare. Remind your clients that doing these things in the short and long term will go a long way to consistently avoid redness.

  • Avoid heat and sweat – Since waxing removes a layer of dead skin, exposure to sun, hot showers, or exercise within two hours can increase irritation.

  • Use a post-wax acne gel – A blemish control gel with ingredients like organic sulfur can suppress bacteria and keep hair follicles clear.

  • Soothe with the right products – Recommend post-wax creams containing green tea and white tea for their anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness by up to 60%.

  • Exfoliate and hydrate – Clients should start exfoliating again 24 hours post-wax using the same exfoliating gloves and body wash to prevent ingrown hairs and keep the skin hydrated.

  • Stick to a schedule – Regular waxing every 4-5 weeks helps the skin adjust, leading to reduced irritation and discomfort over time.

The right products: Send them home with a post-wax kit that ensures they have everything they need to keep up a consistent routine.
