Tuel Q + A: Everything You Need To Know About Serums
If there was a skincare powerhouse right now, it would definitely be serums. These highly active, ultra-hydrating, skin smoothing, acne-fighting products are an absolute must-have element in a proper skincare routine. They penetrate deeper, contain a much more concentrated level of active ingredients, and are designed to fight specific issues with all-natural ingredients. With the rise of these skincare powerhouses come some questions too–– even the most seasoned professionals (and clients too) might need a little clarification. At Tuel, we seriously can’t live without our serums and the results they achieve for our clients. That’s why we decided to break down your most burning serum questions in a quick guide featuring everything you need to know about skincare’s latest superhero.
q. What are the benefits of using face serums?
A: Designed to target specific skin issues, serums don’t contain many of the heavier ingredients found in moisturizers, meaning they offer a much higher concentration of active ingredients skin craves. Regular use leaves skin clearer, firmer, and smoother, and can reduce the size of pores. Serums drench the skin in antioxidants, vitamins, anti-inflammatory botanicals (such as aloe vera), and help strengthen the skin’s barrier which improves hydration.
Q. What are face serums made of?
A: Take it from us, not all serums are created equal. At the core, we believe nature has given us everything we need for healthy skin––that’s why we don’t mess around with harsh ingredients. Our serums contain no phthalates, sulfates, parabens, synthetic dyes, artificial fragrances, and are 100% vegan. Instead, we believe the most powerful of serums are packed with high-quality, all-natural plant extracts that are rich in potent antioxidants and vitamins. We like to use all-natural ingredients such as green tea, vitamins C and B5, tea tree oil, and mushroom stem to fight skin challenges such as acne, aging, and excess oil production.
Q. How do you apply serums for maximum results?
A: Remember a little goes a really long way...think just a pea-sized amount. Teach your clients to apply serums to damp skin with their fingertips, patting first then gently smoothing it out. Never massage it in, instead let it absorb on its own. (Tip: damp skin is ten times more permeable than dry skin.)
Q. When is the best time to apply a serum?
A: We like to tell our professionals that the best time to apply a serum is in the final phase of your facial treatment. Start the “Finish Phase” by adding your products in order of thickness (thin to thick), which means your serums come first. Remember to choose serums based on client skin type and issues, and remember it’s ok to layer them on. Our favorite combo? Start with the C-Power for anti-aging, firming, and brightening, then finish with Hydrate to instantly infuse the skin with essential hydration to plump and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After you apply the serums, add your eye product and then either suncare for day, or a moisturizer for night. (Pro Tip: Use the eye products on your client’s lips as well.) Once at home, your client’s skincare routine should follow this order: Cleanser, Serums, Moisturizer, Sun Protection.
