Let’s Talk About Peels

If lackluster winter skin has many of your clients frustrated, it’s time to talk to them about peels. Peel treatments, especially in the winter months, are one of the best ways to get their skin back on track. Chemical peels have a variety of benefits—from improving tone and texture to helping with acne scars, peels can quickly and effectively breakdown the top layer of skin to reveal glowing results. Let’s talk about peels and our recommended treatments from our Tuel Professionals.

All About Peels

Peels rely on Alpha-hydroxy acids (plant-derived acids) to breakdown the top layer of dead skin, dissolving the outer layers to even skin tone and texture. During the process, peels also help promote the building of collagen and make the skin more receptive to skincare products, increasing efficacy and performance. Basically, a peel gives the skin a chance to regenerate and create fresh, new skin in the least invasive way possible. Regular peel treatments can also correct discoloration from acne scars and age spots, help with fine lines and wrinkles, and prevent acne breakouts. Before any professional peel treatment, it is highly recommended your clients use Power Peel and Hydrate for at least two weeks to prep the skin.

Types of Professional Peel Treatments

There are three peel treatments that we recommend incorporating into your services for clients. They include:

  1. Professional Glycolic Treatment: This treatment is best when performed weekly for six weeks, three times a year. During the refine phase of your facial, break up the process based on where your client is in the series of treatments. We recommend only experience estheticians familiar with Tuel products perform this treatment.
  • First and Second Treatments: Use a mask brush to mix 1 teaspoon of Enzyme Peel Exfoliating Mask with 1/3 teaspoon of Glycolic Solution and 2/3 teaspoon water in a bowl. Work quickly to apply to face, neck and décolleté, avoiding the eyelids and applying to cheeks last. Leave on for 2-7 minutes depending on thickness of skin. Using steam, keep the skin moist and then rinse well with warm water.
  • Third and Fourth Treatments: Increase the amount of Glycolic Solution to 2/3 teaspoon and follow the same steps. Remember, the amount of Glycolic solution is increased, not the amount of time the mixture is left on.
  • Fifth and Sixth Treatments: Intensify the mixture by adding 1 teaspoon of Glycolic Acid to 1 teaspoon of Enzyme Peel. Do not add water. Time should only be increased according to your professional judgement and customer’s tolerance.

  1. Professional Salicylic/Lactic Peel Treatment: Understanding your client’s skin is important before beginning this treatment, so doing a consultation and signing a release form is important. Also educate them on the proper at home care and make sure they understand proper side effects and healing process. This type of peel is best for acne, anti-aging or moderate skin resurfacing.
  • During the refine stage of your facial treatment, apply 10 drops of Salicylic/Lactic Acid peel on a moistened cotton round. Quickly apply to the face and neck, working from chin to forehead to cheeks. Do the neck last. You can also apply to the décolleté area using an additional ten drops. Leave on for up to 5 minutes. Neutralize with your chosen method. If doing a full facial, follow with extraction.

  1. Advanced Layer Peel Treatment: Again, always be familiar with your client’s skin before performing this treatment, have them sign a waiver and be sure to determine the thickness of the skin to decide how long to leave on each layer. Use the Mature line of products, unless they have acne, then use the Acne line.
  • Start the refine stage with manual exfoliation by applying a small amount of Power Scrub to your hands using a little bit of water. After scrubbing, remove with sponges.
  • Then mix ½ teaspoon Enzyme Peel with Glycolic Solution and 6-8 drops of Salicylic/Lactic Acid. Use water if needed to make a paste. Apply to face, neck and décolleté, removing with sponges.
  • Finally, apply Glycolic Solution or Salicylic/Lactic Acid to cotton and wipe face, neck and décolleté. Work quickly and apply evenly.

Always follow up any peel treatment by discussing at home post treatment care, and an overall daily skincare routine that is best for their skin type.
